The Kebbi State Government has constituted a high powered committee to investigate the spate of fire outbreaks recorded in schools across the state, as part of efforts to determine their causes and prevent future occurrences.
The decision, according to an official directive issued from the Office of the Executive Governor and conveyed through the Ministry of Innovation and Digital Economy, was taken on January 14, 2026.
The committee is chaired by the Commissioner for Innovation and Digital Economy, Hon. Ibrahim Muhammad Sakaba. Other members include the Chairman of the Kebbi State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Prof. Sulaiman Khalid; the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education; representatives of the Commissioner of Police and the Department of State Services (DSS); as well as officials of the State Fire Service.
The Executive Director of the Kebbi State Security Management Agency will serve as Secretary of the committee.
According to the directive, the panel is mandated to investigate both the remote and immediate causes of the infernos affecting schools across the state, assess the extent of damage and losses incurred, and recommend appropriate safety, security and preventive measures.
The committee is also expected to submit a comprehensive report containing actionable recommendations to the state government.
The Kebbi State Government reiterated its commitment to safeguarding students, teachers and educational infrastructure, assuring residents that decisive steps would be taken to forestall a recurrence of such incidents and strengthen safety standards in schools statewide.
