The Bank of Namibia has lauded its Governor, Johannes !Gawaxab, for earning a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Economics from the University of Cape Town, describing his research as a significant contribution to scholarship and policy in Southern Africa.

In a statement, the central bank said Dr. !Gawaxab’s doctoral thesis, titled “Assessing the Optimality of the Common Monetary Area in Southern Africa: A Case of Namibia’s Members”, interrogates exchange rate regimes and optimal currency areas, with a focus on Namibia’s peg to the South African Rand.
The research not only evaluates the benefits and challenges of the current arrangement but also advances discussions on the prospects of a single African currency, a subject of growing relevance in regAccording to the Bank, the Governor’s academic feat reflects his intellectual rigour and steadfast leadership in shaping Namibia’s economic discourse.
