The African Women Leaders Network (AWLN) Nigeria Chapter has launched its National Consortium on Women in Governance, Peace and Security with support from UN Women Nigeria and funding from the Government of Germany.

The initiative is aimed at strengthening women’s participation in leadership and decision-making across the country.
The launch brought together leaders, advocates, and women’s rights groups, including the Women’s Rights Initiative (WORI), to push for policies that advance gender equality and women’s empowerment in governance structures.

Speaking at the event, Beatrice Eyong UN Women Country Representative to Nigeria, commended AWLN’s dedication to advancing gender equality and women’s empowerment (GEWE).

She urged stakeholders to intensify support for the SpecialSeatsBill which seeks to guarantee women’s representation in governance.
Representing the German Ambassador to Nigeria, Mrs. Lorena Mohr reaffirmed Germany’s long-standing commitment to the cause, noting that the country has been supporting women’s leadership in Nigeria since 2017.

In her remarks, Prof. Oluwafunmilayo J. Para-Mallam Country Chair of AWLN Nigeria, expressed gratitude to UN Women and the German Government for their continuous support.

She emphasized that women, as the backbone of society, must be fully represented at the decision-making table to shape peace, security, and governance in Nigeria.
