In a heartfelt display of community solidarity, the management of Red China Restaurant in Kano on Tuesday distributed food items and other forms of support to more than 200 needy residents as part of its annual Ramadan humanitarian initiative.
The gesture, which took place at the restaurant’s premises, was led by the establishment’s manager, Mr. Lok, and his wife. It is part of the restaurant’s long-standing tradition of assisting vulnerable members of the community during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, a period marked by increased charitable giving.
Addressing beneficiaries, Mr. Lok said the outreach reflected the restaurant’s commitment to social responsibility and community welfare. He noted that despite facing business challenges, the proprietors chose to stand with those who are enduring hardship.
“We see so many people in difficult times. Although we also face challenges, we try to do what we can to help others because they also assist us,” he said.
The initiative this year coincides with both the Chinese New Year and Ramadan observances, highlighting a spirit of cultural unity and mutual respect across diverse communities in Kano. Mr. Lok described the gesture as a symbol of shared joy and cooperation, reinforcing ties between the restaurant and its patrons.
A staff member, Abubakar Musa Gawuna, emphasised that the beneficiaries, drawn from different walks of life, were not pre-selected but arrived voluntarily, underscoring the goodwill reputation the restaurant has built over the years.
Several recipients expressed gratitude to the management for their continued support, praying for blessings and increased capacity to help others.
The gesture follows a broader trend of Ramadan philanthropy in northern Nigeria, where individuals, community groups and private enterprises increasingly provide relief to the less privileged as part of the spiritual tenets of the fasting season.
