In a move that has underscored his lifelong commitment to scholarship and public service, the Emir of Kano, Dr. Muhammadu Sanusi II, has secured a special admission to study Law at the Northwest University, Kano, with effect from the current academic session.
The revered monarch, a former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria and globally respected public intellectual, was admitted to commence the Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) programme at Level 200, following the consideration of his extensive academic background and professional experience.
Sources within the university confirmed that the admission was granted under special academic provisions available to mature and distinguished candidates with relevant prior qualifications.
Dr. Sanusi is already a graduate of Economics and holds advanced degrees, alongside decades of experience in banking, public policy, traditional governance and international diplomacy.
University officials said the Emir met all statutory requirements for admission into the Law programme and was duly screened in line with institutional and regulatory guidelines.
They noted that his entry at Level 200 was approved in recognition of prior academic exposure and competence in related disciplines.
The development has attracted widespread attention across Kano State and beyond, with academics, legal practitioners and members of the public describing the decision as both symbolic and inspiring. Many view the Emir’s pursuit of a legal education as a strong statement on the value of continuous learning, irrespective of age or status.
Observers also note that the study of law could further enrich Dr. Sanusi’s longstanding engagement with issues of constitutionalism, governance, justice reform, Islamic jurisprudence and public accountability areas on which he has frequently spoken both locally and internationally.
Northwest University, Kano, a state-owned institution established to expand access to higher education, has in recent years intensified efforts to strengthen its College of Law and attract seasoned academics and students.
For the Emir, the latest academic pursuit adds to an already distinguished profile that blends traditional leadership with modern scholarship, reinforcing his reputation as one of Nigeria’s most intellectually engaged royal fathers.
It was gathered that Dr. Sanusi is expected to combine his studies with his duties as Emir, as well as other national and international engagements, a balancing act admirers say he has mastered over the years.
