The Kebbi State Government has officially launched its 2025 livestock vaccination campaign, targeting more than two million animals against Contagious Bovine Pleuropneumonia (CBPP) and Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD).
The exercise was flagged off on Monday at Hutawa village in Birnin Kebbi, the state capital.

Governor Nasir Idris, represented at the event by senior government officials, said the initiative was part of his administration’s agricultural transformation agenda, aimed at protecting livestock health, boosting food security, and strengthening the economy of pastoralists and farmers across the state.

“Our livestock sector is a major contributor to the economy and a source of livelihood for thousands of families. By protecting cattle and other animals from deadly diseases like CBPP and LSD, we are securing not only the income of farmers but also the nutritional needs of our people,”
she e explained that the campaign was designed to cover rural communities in all 21 local government areas of the state, with veterinary experts and extension workers deployed to ensure smooth execution.
The ministry for Animal Health and Fisheries, described CBPP and LSD as major threats to livestock production in Nigeria, noting that outbreaks in the past had led to devastating losses for farmers.
She assured stakeholders that the government would sustain annual vaccination drives to ensure food sufficiency and reduce dependency on imports.
Traditional leaders, community representatives, and livestock associations present at the launch commended the state government for prioritizing animal health.
They pledged to mobilize herders and farmers to present their animals for vaccination, stressing that cooperation was key to the success of the exercise.
Experts say the campaign will not only curb livestock mortality but also enhance Kebbi’s position as a leading hub for agriculture and animal production in Nigeria.
