The Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD), James David Lalu Gufwan, has applauded the Federal University, Lafia, for its pioneering commitment to inclusive education and empowerment of students with disabilities, describing the institution as a model for higher education in Nigeria.

Gufwan, who gave the commendation while highlighting the institution’s progressive policies, said the university has set a remarkable standard for disability-inclusive education through bold initiatives that directly reduce barriers for students with special needs.
He particularly praised the Vice Chancellor and management of the institution for championing disability-friendly measures such as:
75% subsidy on school fees and charges, easing financial burdens for students with disabilities;
Special admission policy with a 2% quota ensuring equitable academic opportunities;
Establishment of a Center for Disability Studies, dedicated to advancing research, training, and advocacy;
Special hostel allocations, providing safe and accessible accommodation; and
Regular engagement with students with disabilities, ensuring their voices are heard and integrated into the university’s policies.
“These initiatives not only align with the Revised National Policy on Inclusive Education (2024), but also reflect Nigeria’s broader goals of social inclusion and poverty reduction,” Gufwan stated, adding that the institution’s example should inspire other universities across the country.
He further noted that the NCPWD looks forward to strengthening collaboration with the university in advancing inclusive education and creating sustainable pathways for persons with disabilities to thrive. Gufwan also urged the Vice Chancellor to serve as an ambassador in championing similar initiatives in other institutions nationwide.
